The Grand Palace
Bangkok
One of the main landmarks in Thailand, the Grand Palace is positioned in the center of Bangkok and is easy to reach. The palace was built in 1782 and served as a residence of the Siam Kings. Today, the present king Rama IX does not reside in the Grand Palace, but uses it for royal ceremonies and official events.
The complex has a rectangular form and is surrounded by four walls, positioned on the Chao Phraya River banks. The Grand Palace is appealing to travellers because of its many buildings surrounded by courtyards and gardens, its vast lawns and pavilions. It is divided into several zones - the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Outer and the Middle Court, the Inner Court and the Siwalai Gardens area. Partially open to visitors, the Grand Palace is an attraction to visit.
