Kayaking / Paddle Sports in Bangkok

Bangkok isn’t just traffic jams and neon lights. Hop on a kayak, and you can weave through the city’s old canals or float along the Chao Phraya River far away from the usual crowds.

The Thonburi area is where I usually recommend starting for kayaking. You’ll paddle past century-old wooden houses, lively markets, and quiet temples you’d never see from a tuk-tuk. There’s a calmness about the water in early morning or late afternoon that’s hard to beat. Plus, you can spot kingfishers, monitor lizards, and if you’re lucky, the rare Irrawaddy dolphin upriver.

If you want something a bit more open, the Bang Kachao green space is great for paddle sports too. It’s this massive green lung just south of Bangkok proper, sometimes called the “Green Lung of Bangkok,” and kayaking here feels more like an escape. Oh, and a tip , bring insect repellent, especially if you paddle near sunset. Also, booking a guided group can be worth it, especially if you want local stories tied to the canals.

So, getting onto the water in Bangkok doesn’t mean heading to the beach. It’s about seeing the city from a refreshing angle and getting a little exercise along the way.
