Khua Kling Pak Sod
Bangkok
Khua Kling is the Thai name for a pungent dry fried curry from South Thailand which is spicy and full of intense Asian flavours of turmeric, and this small Thai restaurant offers a good range of interesting curries and southern flavours, as well as classic dishes from around Thailand. Khua Kling Pak Sod's dishes are classic rather than inventive, but because the recipes are not usually seen in mainstream tourist restaurants the dishes are a real chance to go native.
Stink beans come from what look like cartoon style giant green pods and are stir fried with a shrimp paste to give an authentic, if acquired taste. More familiar aromas are found in yellow curry with bamboo shoots which is served with fish or meat, as well as velvety yellow crab curry. Other classics include crispy pork belly dishes with soft meat and crunchy crackling, and prawns stir-fried with a myriad of Asian ingredients. More upmarket dishes include fish fried with garlic.
The ambience is that of a local-style bistro, with personal portraits on the wall, and the type of decoration you might see in a family home, such as a cabinet with glasses, ornaments and table lamps, along with Buddhist and Thai artifacts. There is a small garden outside with a few tables and chairs.
