Curries & More

An impressive building with huge floor to ceiling windows cuts a striking pose on a leafy, neighbourhood style street, by Thong Lor with big trees and enough of a pond to keep the urban landscape at bay a little. Curries & More is a contemporary Thai and Western restaurant from the same stable as the iconic Baan Khanitha which has long been touted as a must-visit restaurant for anyone jetting into Bangkok who wants the whole package of classic flavours with carefully presented dishes, in an old Thai style house.

Curries & More on the other hand is unique in that it manages to be all things to all people. The centerpiece of Curries & More is a long wine bar surrounded by glass with views of the green trees outside, and an attractive wine terrace with a relaxed ambience. The décor is stylish, modern and chic, as would be expected in this trendy Sukhumvit district. Racks of wine bottles and high shelves of interesting liquors give the space a big city feel and add a cool edge to this part of the restaurant complex.

The dining room is full of natural daylight and the honey tones of the wooden flooring and uncluttered design and furnishings, give Curries & More a fresh, smart and easy to relax in appearance. The beauty of the design is that it fits well with lunches in light and airy surroundings, whilst still looking the part as the sun goes down.

Despite its name Curries & More does not specialise in Thai curries, although there are some curry dishes on the menu. Instead it offers a menu of Italian classics such as lasagna, and spinach and ricotta ravioli, as well as some tasty fish dishes such as grilled tiger prawns with papaya salad, and some interesting fusion offerings as well such as tom yam khung caesar salad with the hot and sour flavours of what is usually a Thai seafood soup. Whilst sophistication is entertained in the wine bar, with live music performances some evenings, Curries & More is also geared towards lunchtimes and afternoon tea and manages to pull off a café atmosphere during the day which is down to its clever design. Big glossy photos of larger than life desserts and rows upon rows of sweet temptations are set out in a chiller. Warm chocolate lava cake, cranberry mascarpone soufflé, and raspberry panna cotta, not to mention hazelnut praline crepe, look like works of art and are the type of desserts you might pose in front of for some holiday snaps before digging in.

The karaoke room has a flat screen TV and the muted décor of an elegant boardroom. Set for up to 15 people, up-to-date choices can be belted out in English as well as Thai, Chinese and Japanese. The private dining room is light, airy and has a no-nonsense décor that makes the space comfortable rather than special.

The food at Curries & More has certainly had mixed reviews, including some outstanding recommendations. The issue could well be that the building looks so big that it needs to be at least half full to really create the right ambience, and this is not always guaranteed. However, along with its famous sister restaurant Curries & More is also worthy of a stop off in the day or for a glass of wine and some food in the evening too.
