Le Bouchon
Bangkok
If ever there was a restaurant that stood apart from its setting it is Le Bouchon. Nestled in the rough and tumble of colourful Patpong, the city's well-known adult entertainment zone, this small French eatery truly is a hidden gem.
The few tables are huddled together, the lighting is dimmed, and the white tablecloths, candles, and walls covered with artistic prints create a romantic atmosphere, which is in stark contrast to the less gentle ambience on the streets outside. It is a place to escape into for a lunch or dinner away from the hustle and bustle.
Goat's cheese salad, scallop ravioli with lobster sauce, and homemade duck pate are some of the appetisers that tempt diners at Le Bouchon. Alongside the main menu there is a changing blackboard of specials, which gives this tiny restaurant a big menu of traditional flavours of France, which might include French saucisson, mussels, and heart artichokes with Parmesan cheese.
Mains include classics such as frogs legs cooked with garlic, and pork fillet Cordon Bleu stuffed with ham and cheese. Fish dishes include sole fish in a mushroom sauce, and red snapper in a prawn and red pepper sauce.
Desserts are indulgent and classic too, with crème brûlée and chocolate mousse and even at lunchtime Le Bouchon feels like the type of place you can relax for a while with a coffee before venturing out into the chaos of the city.
