China Town (Yaowarat Road)
Bangkok
Yaowarat Road is a buzzing street market-like environment packed with discount gold shops, market stalls, Chinese restaurants, and enormous neon signs in both Thai and Chinese. This neighbourhood has been selling goods imported from China since 1782, and much of the architecture and lifestyle has remained unchanged over the past few hundred years. The gentle bends in Yaowarat Road are believed to mirror the shape of a dragon's back, which is considered to be a good omen by the local Chinese people. Some of the highlights include Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, Bangkok's largest and most important Chinese-Buddhist temple; as well as the Temple of the Golden Buddha, Wat Traimit. That said, the best way to really experience China Town is just to get lost in the busy streets, try some of the fantastic food and generally soak up the atmosphere.
