No trip to Bangkok is complete without a visit to Khao San Road, a short street famous for its cheap accommodation and backpacker culture. Khao San is about 1 km north of the Grand Palace and is packed with guesthouses, internet cafes, bars, restaurants, massage parlours and market stalls selling clothes, second-hand books, and pirated CDs and DVDs. In the evening, the street turns into one big party, with bars along the road blasting pop music and busy street carts selling all kinds of food. It's a great place to meet other backpackers, and it also acts as stop-over point for many travelers.
Buses leave Khao San Road daily for all the main tourist destinations throughout Thailand, and there are dozens of travel agencies who can help you with visas or onward transport to other countries in South-East Asia.
