Description
Begin your day before Ayutthaya wakes up. At Wat Ratchaburana, climb the crumbling steps of a 15th-century prang and duck down into a burial vault where the original frescoes still cling to the walls. Learn about the temple built for two princes who killed each other over the throne.
Cross the road and arrive at Wat Mahathat, home to the single most photographed image in Thailand: a sandstone Buddha head wrapped in banyan roots that grew together over centuries. From there, Wat Phra Si Sanphet's three white chedis close out the temple run — the old royal palace grounds, once home to a 16-meter gold-covered Buddha.
By early afternoon, head east to Khao Yai, Thailand's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Have lunch at the park's food court before settling into Lam Takong campsite, where sambar deer and barking deer wade the riverbank without a fence in sight, monitor lizards the length of a car sun themselves on the banks, and gibbons swing loose through the canopy overhead.
From there, your guide drives the park roads during peak wildlife hours, when elephants, wild boar, hornbills, and macaques are most likely to cross your path, before angling toward the day's finale.
As the sun drops, post up outside Khao Luk Chang cave and watch millions of wrinkle-lipped bats stream out in a single unbroken ribbon against the sunset — a two-hour spectacle most Bangkok day trips miss entirely because they've already turned for home.
